Monday 7th September

Today we travel along the banks of Thirlmere, a reservoir supplying Manchester and on to Grasmere a charming village in the very heart of the Lake District. Grasmere was the home of one of the most famous poet William Wordsworth; you can visit two of his former homes: Rydal Mount and Dove Cottage.

From here we travel on to Bowness-on-Windermere, a busy holiday town on the banks of Windermere. This thriving town has hundreds of shops and an abundance of restaurants and cafes. We then go to Kendal, a historic market town that has a unique blend of history, culture and shopping making it very popular with visitors. We return to our hotel by way of the spectacular Kirkstone Pass and along the banks of Ullswater.

Tuesday 8th September
Coniston and Holker Hall. After going south to Ambleside before turning west along the banks of Coniston Water going through Penny Bridge and Low Wood to Holker Hall. This is a stately home set in 200 acres of parkland with an immaculately kept 2520acre garden. We will visit the house and you can visit the gardens or the fascinating motor museum before driving to the lakeside at the south end of Lake Windermere.

Wednesday 9th September

We have a more relaxed day as we travel along the banks of Derwent Water and pass through the beautiful villages of Borrowdale and Byttermere on our way to Cockermouth. This is a very attractive Georgian market town and where Wordsworth House, the birthplace of William Wordsworth, the poet is situated. The medieval main street has a range of local shops, antique shops and small galleries. The entertaining Sheep and Wool Centre is a real hands-on opportunity to meet Cumbria's most famous residents. Our return journey to the hotel takes us along the entire length of Bassenthwaith Lake.

Thursday 10th September

Carlisle Castle

Our journey today takes us north to visit Hadrian's Wall and travel into Scotland visiting Gretna Green when young elopers go to get married over the anvil in the blacksmiths shop. We will also visit Carlisle Castle and will return via the costal route.

Friday 11th September

This morning we board a steam boat at Pooley Bridge for a trip on Ullswater, often described as England's most beautiful lake, and generally acknowledged as the setting for Wordsworth's "Daffodils". We disembark at Glenridding, on the southern end of the lake, and drive over the amazing Kirkstone Pass to Windermere, where we spend the afternoon.
